In a week that saw Israel announce its plans for a new ‘concentration camp’ in Gaza, and the news that almost 800 people had been killed while queuing for food, while 10 people, including six children who were killed when a so-called ‘technical error’ saw an Israeli air strike hit a crown waiting for water, Southampton saw another demonstration in support of the Palestinian people, organised by PSC Southampton (.
Meeting in Guildhall Square, demonstrators marched silently down to the Bargate passing shoppers and visitors before returning with chants of ‘In our thousands, in our millions, we are all Palestinians’. Highlighting the ridiculous nature of the Government’s prohibition order on a pro-Palestine protest group, one man shouted ‘terrorists’ as the group passed, which bemused many of the children marching with their families.
There was a picnic at the city’s Peace Fountain, where speakers highlighted the growing discontent with the government’s failure to take any steps to stop the genocide, instead attacking those highlighting the atrocities carried out by Israel and calling for an end to it. The speeches ended with a poem by a local activist.
