Audiences who have been following the fortunes of the writers and directors of the Unwritten artist development programme at Theatre Royal Winchester are invited to support the winners at their final Showcase on Friday 29 August.
The two winning shows that will be performed are: Alternative Reality about a long suffering wife, Paula, who is out of patience with her nice but predictable husband and how she will react when he buys her the most unusual birthday present ever – and, Soulmates – about a boy and a girl who build a connection rooted in friendship, acceptance and maybe love. It looks at what it means to be soulmates and if these two people can form a lifelong bond.
Alternative Reality is by Jonathan Edgington – a writer of plays, sketches and a best-selling series of short pantomimes, and is directed by Alix Cazalet – who has a passion for new musical theatre writing, comedy and audio. Soulmates is by Sara Fairclough –currently performing a selection of new writings; and is directed by Rebecca Godden – whose work blends live theatre and immersive/site specific performance
The Unwritten Showcase is the culmination of a number of events that started with a ‘speed-dating’ event in April that saw local writers and directors coming together to discuss creative ideas and form partnerships to devise original monologues and duologues for the Unwritten: Scratch Night in June. At that event, two winning pairs were chosen and they have since received rehearsal space and support to develop their work for the Showcase.
Unwritten is an artist development programme devised by Playmakers – the creative learning and community engagement work of the arts and education charity, Play to the Crowd – which also runs Theatre Royal Winchester and Hat Fair. The programme reflects the charity’s commitment to nurturing talent and showcasing local emerging voices.
The Unwritten: Showcase is a Pick Your Price event meaning audiences can choose a ticket option that works best for them and enjoy the show for as little as £4.
Unwritten: Showcase will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Friday 29 August at 7pm. For more information, or to book tickets, visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
