Dance enthusiasts can delight in a triple bill of classical Indian pieces when the show, Sevens, comes to Theatre Royal Winchester on Tuesday 16 September.

Sevens features Bharatanatyam and Kathak dance – the former from southern India is known for its graceful and sculptural poses, hand gestures and facial expressions; the latter from northern India, known for its fluid body movements and intricate footwork. It is a show that explores the sacred and sometimes sinful significance of the number seven and takes audiences on an emotive, entertaining journey, via the playful, energetic and contemplative.

The three pieces that feature include Seven Snags – a fast-paced, rhythmic ensemble piece full of exciting dynamics and challenging cross-rhythms that represents the dating culture of youth; Seven Steps is a duet based on ‘saptapadi’ – or seven steps – with each step the couple taking, a vow, which is beautiful, simple and timeless; while Seven Sins is a thought-provoking piece based on rights and wrongs that questions the social norm.

The pieces are by one of the UK’s leading choreographers – Nina Rajarani MBE– who runs the independent Indian dance and music organisation, Srishti – established in 1991 and the resident company of the Harrow Arts Centre; with original music by award-winning composer and vocalist Y Yadavan and chart-topping performer Shammi Pithia.

The evening includes a post-show chat.

Sevens will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Tuesday 16 September at 7.30pm. Recommended age: 9+. For more information, or to book tickets, visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
