Musical enthusiasts are invited to a celebratory evening honouring the comic author, P. G. Wodehouse, when Play On Words: A musical celebration of P. G. Wodehouse on Broadway comes to Theatre Royal Winchester on Tuesday 7 October.

This special presentation celebrates the writer, ‘Plum’ Wodehouse, who – despite writing stories like ‘musical comedies without the music’ – enjoyed a record-breaking five musicals on Broadway at the same time!

Writing during the Golden Age of stage and screen, Wodehouse’s musicals from 1915 – 1935 defined the American musical and informed the way that he wrote his novels and characters. This evening – packed with stories and song – also features theatrical writing highlights from the last 120 years from the likes of composers and lyricists such as Gershwin, Rogers & Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim and more.

The evening is performed by Wodehouse’s own step-great grandson, Hal Cazalet – an opera singer and cabaret artist who has appeared worldwide and has been described by Stephen Fry as ‘an enchanting entertainer… with a wonderfully expressive voice and all the wit and charm of Wodehouse’.

It features musical accompaniment from conductor, singer and musician Simon Beck on piano – in a show by Hugh Wooldridge – who, during his career, has directed everything from plays in London to international large scale events and tours; he has produced TV shows; taught; and directed short films during the pandemic.

Play On Words: A musical celebration of P.G. Wodehouse on Broadway will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Tuesday 7 October at 7.30pm.  For more information, or to book tickets, visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
