Reader’s letter: dignity is not conditional

By Jayanti Shah, MBE.

Migrants are now  set to be told they must “prove” they deserve to stay—by volunteering, mastering perfect English, and waiting ten long years.
Let’s be clear: this isn’t fairness. It’s a shifting of the goalposts for people who already contribute, already belong, already call this country home.
· They pay taxes.
· They raise families.
· They heal the sick, staff our shops, clean our streets, and keep our services running.
· They build communities every day—not just through formal volunteering, but through countless quiet acts of care and resilience.
Many already speak several languages, including English. But fluency should never be a gatekeeper to dignity. Language can be learned and nurtured; belonging is lived every day.
This policy risks turning permanent settlement into a performance—where only the most visible, most “acceptable” contributions count. It erases the labour of carers, cleaners, delivery drivers, and corner-shop workers whose efforts rarely make headlines but keep the UK alive.
And doubling the wait from five to ten years is not just a number. It means a decade of insecurity, a decade of families unsure if they can plant roots, a decade of people who followed the rules being told the rules have changed—again.
And let’s be honest about the politics: chasing Reform UK or the far right by copying their rhetoric is a dangerous game. Every time mainstream parties compete on cruelty, the bar only moves lower—and migrants pay the price.
A just society doesn’t demand proof of worth from those who have already given so much. Integration should be supported, not weaponised. Contribution should be recognised, not constantly redefined to fit political optics.
Let’s fight for a UK that keeps its promises, honours its neighbours, and understands this simple truth:
Dignity is not conditional.
