One of In Common’s founding principles was to promote community cohesion and this has always been key to what we do.
Of course, a community won’t always agree with each other, but in any area it’s important that we seek to understand each other and to be understood.
Trading insults, slurs and offensive memes can only stand in the way of meaningful dialogue and creates an increasingly toxic environment.
We do not want to facilitate a medium for hatred to be voiced and to grow further, as people become entrenched in their positions and turn to name calling rather than hearing each other or making their own point.
Division and hatred can be great for clicks but we’re not here to gain followers, we’re here to have a positive impact on the local and wider community that we live in.
For this reason, we are making two changes to our Facebook account.
1 – we will be deleting offensive comments and name calling – towards individuals or groups of people. Due to the volume of comments we may miss some, so if you see something offensive, please report it.
2 – only followers of the page will be able to comment. We hope that this will help foster a greater sense of responsibility and also support those who care about their community to post.
We hope that these changes will help us to find common ground and be able to learn from each other.
Thank you for being part of our community.
- In Common is not for profit. We rely on donations from readers to keep the site running. Could you help to support us for as little as 25p a week? Please help us to carry on offering independent grass roots media. Visit: https://www.patreon.com/incommonsoton
