Preview: The Wassail, Theatre Royal Winchester

Christmas comes early with festive cheer from folk favourites, Eliza Carthy and Jon Boden – with The Wassail at Theatre Royal Winchester on Wednesday 12 November.

This is an evening of seasonal material performed before a stage of illuminated Christmas trees. The Wassail is inspired by a time that existed long before carolling – when festive revellers went door to door, exchanging songs for money, food and ale. So was born the Old English term, waes hael – or wassail – a toast wishing good!

The evening’s performance comes from folk favourites, Eliza Carthy and Jon Boden. Carthy is one of the most recognisable faces in British folk with 30+ years in the business; a multi award winner; MBE recipient; championed by the likes of John Peel; and a member of The Imagined Village, The Wayward Band, and Eliza Carthy & The Restitution. While Boden is best known for being the lead singer of the multi-award winning folk band, Bellowhead. He has also performed with his own band, The Remnant Kings; in a duo with fellow Bellowhead member John Spiers; plus, his own solo work. He also composes music for theatre and film.

Carthy and Boden’s wassail will be touring the country this November and December, spreading good cheer and lighting up the darkest days of the year!

The Wassail with Eliza Carthy & Jon Boden will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Wednesday12 November at 7.30pm. For more information, or to book tickets, visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
