Review: MAMMA MIA!, Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, 28 October 2025

By Catherine Collins.

Here we go again… the sensational feel-good musical, MAMMA MIA!, began its UK tour at Mayflower Theatre last week.

And what better way is there to cheer up a dark October night than this story of love, friendship and identity, set on a Greek island paradise and cleverly told through the timeless songs of ABBA.

Mother and daughter duo Donna and Sophie Sheridan, are played by Jenn Griffin and Lydia Hunt (with Ashleigh Jones as an alternate Donna), Luke Jasztal as Sam Carmichael, Mark Goldthorp as Bill Austin, and Richard Meek as Harry Bright.

Rosie Glossop and Sarah Earnshaw play Rosie and Tanya respectively, and Sarah’s rendition of Does Your Mother Know in the scene with Joseph Vella (Pepper) easily became my favourite part of the evening!

The whole cast are fun, and energetic – but MAMMA MIA! stands out as a musical that is all about the ensemble and choreography.

And Voulez-Vous encapsulates that perfectly, it was a stunning moment, and not one cast member put a foot wrong!

Some of the past tours have received criticism of the set design, and it’s easy to see why. It is very simple, but it works well and the costumes and lighting more than make up for it.

There are flares, flippers and spandex galore to compliment the 22 musical numbers the audience are treated to, excluding the encore, which in true ABBA style has everything you could want,

The entire auditorium were partying on their feet for the finale of three of ABBA’s biggest hits, including Mamma Mia and Waterloo.

So if you need a pick me up this autumn, then MAMMA MIA! Will do just that – so get your tickets and experience the pure joy this jukebox musical provides!

Tickets for Mamma Mia! (Friday 24 October – Saturday 8 November 2025) are on sale at mayflower.org.uk or 02380 711811.
