Last week, Theatre Royal Winchester played host to a dame, a cat and a baddie – looking forward to welcoming audiences to this year’s traditional family pantomime, Puss in Boots.
The theatre opened its doors to Julian Eardley who will play Dame Dolly Duster this Christmas, in his 16th panto at the venue, Bekah Selina who will play Puss, Emma Fenney – this year’s panto baddie – Fluella Frostbite, and the panto’s writer director, Robin Belfield.
During the group’s visit they talked about how they felt about bringing Puss in Boots to the city and became acquainted with the dressing rooms they’ll call home for the pantomime’s five-week run, which begins on Saturday 29 November and ends on Sunday 4 January.

Puss in Boots tells the story of Colin, the poor Miller’s son, who has no chance of impressing the beautiful princess until his faithful cat, Puss, proves to be no ordinary feline by turning him from zero to hero where their adventures begin.
The group were ‘really excited’ about the show and panto season in general.
“It’s lovely because it’s the one time of the year that families come to the theatre together,” says Emma. “It’s part of people’s Christmas calendar and it’s so lovely to be part of that.”

Julian adds: “Also what’s wonderful is when we do the children’s shows for schools because it’s sometimes their first experience of theatre and so it’s hilarious because you never quite know what they’re going to shout out and the energy in the room is fantastic.”
“I’m super excited,” says Robin. “It’s going to be my second panto here at Theatre Royal Winchester and it’s got everything – original music, brilliant performances, lots of colourful characters, lots of jokes, all the usual ingredients, but some nice surprises too!”
“Definitely lots of chaos, lots of mischief, which I always love!” Bekah finishes. “Definitely book your tickets, it’s going to be so much fun, you don’t want to miss the magic we’re going to bring this Christmas!”

Theatre Royal Winchester’s annual pantomime is suitable for families and is packed with original songs, corny jokes, live music and plenty of audience participation. It has been written and directed by Robin Belfield, with music by Simon Slater.
There will be a number of accessible performances of Puss in Boots available, including relaxed, audio-described and BSL-interpreted; plus, the option to livestream at home – ensuring that all audiences can enjoy the show in an environment right for them.
Puss in Boots is supported by the theatre’s charity, Play to the Crowd’s, Corporate Partner, regional law firm, Paris Smith.
Puss in Boots will be at Theatre Royal Winchester from Saturday 29 November 2025 to Sunday 4 January 2026 at various times. For more information, or to book tickets, visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
