Southampton marks Trans Day of Remembrance

Southampton marks Trans Day of Remembrance

On the 20th of November Trans Day Of Remembrance (TDOR) takes place. This is a day where transgender and non binary people from all over the world come together to honour the lives of those lost to violence and suicide.

In Southampton, a vigil is being organised from 7pm. Normally this has been outdoors in one of Southampton’s parks, but due to the extremely cold weather last year, and the cold snap expected this week (where there may be snow on the 20th) organisers have arranged for TDOR to be indoors to be as safe and accessible as possible for attendees and volunteers.
This service will be hosted at a venue in central Southampton. There is both a front entrance with a step, and an accessible entrance at the back of the venue which is suitable for wheelchair users. The venue has toilets, drinks and also food service. The venue is split into different rooms with different numbers of capacity and accessibility, so efforts are being made to amplify the reading of the names so that people not in the room where names are read can still listen to the name reading. Candles can be lit but they must be placed inside lanterns or tealight holders due to fire safety.
This is a very hard day for the trans community. So after the name reading, organisers from Trans Pride Southampton and Southampton Pride welcome attendees to stay to socialise with fellow trans people and allies and be in each others company.
