Another unity march in Portswood this Friday

Another unity march in Portswood this Friday

Following last week’s demonstration, which saw around 100 people march up Portswood high street in a show of community unity, another march is planned for this Friday (21st November).

The marches are organised by Southampton Stand Up To Racism.

The group has also been coordinating counter-protests, in response to weekly anti-asylum seeker rallies outside a hotel in Portswood which houses asylum seekers awaiting the outcome of their asylum applications.

The anti-asylum seeker protests and unity counter demonstrations have been taking place on a weekly basis since early summer.

More recently, the anti-asylum seeker demonstrators have been marching down Portswood High Street and also held a march and rally through Southampton in October, which saw a large mobilisation of counter-protesters in a ‘unity demonstration’, coordinated by SSUTR, alongside local community, church and trade union groups (26th October).

Last week saw ‘unity demonstrators’ march up Portswood high street to the asylum hotel where they held a counter protest, before marching back again afterwards.

A spokesperson for SSUTR said: “United, we walked to the hotel and back – standing with refugees, migrants, and every member of our diverse community.”

The unity demonstration will be from 5pm in Portswood, assembling at the bus stop outside Waitrose.
