Fans of traditional Christmas carols and winter folk songs are invited to Midwinter Revels at Theatre Royal Winchester on Wednesday 17 December.
Midwinter Revels is a charming evening of music and song celebrating Yuletides Past, featuring weird and wonderful instruments, wit and humour.
This brand-new festive show is brought to the stage by GreenMatthews’ Chris Green and Sophie Matthews, who call themselves modern-day balladeers specialising in telling stories through song.
Inspired by ancient troubadour traditions, the duo tour the UK and Europe with their self-made shows featuring a mix of modern folk and ancient instruments from the flute to the crumhorn. GreenMatthews bring new life to material from centuries past.
Chris Green is a regular musician at Shakespeare’s Globe, has released two albums fusing 17th century dance music with electronica, and is touring a new live score for the 1922 silent movie, Nosferatu. Sophie Matthews is one of the UK’s foremost players of the English border bagpipes and plays a variety of early woodwind instruments. She is an accredited lecturer for The Arts Society, primarily in Music in Art; and makes instruments too.
Midwinter Revels follows GreenMatthews’ previous shows, A Christmas Carol: In Concert and A Brief History of Christmas.
Midwinter Revels will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Wednesday 17 December. For more information, or to book tickets, visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
