Review: Glow Marwell

Review: Glow Marwell

By Charlotte Ndupuechi.

Visitors to Marwell Zoo can now step into a world of sparkle and colour as Glow Marwell returns for the festive season. The illuminated light trail, which winds through the zoo after dark, offers families a magical way to celebrate Christmas while exploring the grounds in a whole new way — even if the resident animals are tucked up for the night.

This year’s trail features an impressive collection of large-scale sculptures of crocodiles, elephants, giraffes and cheetahs, all crafted from recycled scrap metal. These striking creations add an artistic twist to the glowing displays and have quickly become a favourite backdrop for photographs.

The lights were officially switched on Thursday, 27 November, by Michael Steele, Managing Director of Kiwi Education, marking the start of what is expected to be one of the zoo’s most popular seasonal events.

Guests can enjoy plenty of picture-perfect moments along the route, helped by bubble and snow machines that add an extra touch of winter wonder. A variety of food and drink stalls are also dotted around the trail, offering warming treats to keep visitors fuelled throughout the evening.

The maintenance team has done a superb job, with the whole trail looking spotless and every light perfectly in place. There were lots of staff on hand, who were friendly and welcoming, adding to the festive feel throughout the zoo.

Glow Marwell runs Thursday to Sunday up until school holidays begin, then opens daily throughout the festive break until it closes on 3 January. Each ticket includes parking, daytime access to the zoo from 10am–4pm, entry to the light trail from 5pm–8pm, and access to the festive plaza with market stalls. Visitors can also meet Father Christmas in his grotto for an additional charge.

See the website for ticket information.
