Preview: My Life with Kenneth Williams, Theatre Royal Winchester

Fans of the late Kenneth Williams are in for a treat when performer David Benson celebrates the actor and comedian in My Life with Kenneth Williams at Theatre Royal Winchester on Wednesday 28 January.

In My Life with Kenneth Williams, David Benson revisits his own classic performance of the star – best known for his roles in the Carry On films – in a new version of a show that thrilled audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe when he first performed it thirty years ago, when he burst onto the scene with the show, Think No Evil Of Us: My Life with Kenneth Williams.

Now, decades on, and during the year the star would have celebrated his 100th birthday (next month, February), Benson presents a new version of the show, exploring the connections that link his own life with that of Williams when Benson was only a boy.

Celebrating the star who impressed with his characters in the popular radio comedy show, Hancock’s Half Hour, Benson demonstrates an impeccably honed craft to give an unsparing portrayal of the tormented comedy star, from hilarity to self-pity in public and private.

As a captivating storyteller in his own right, Benson has tales of his own, of his time as ‘the man who does Kenneth Williams’ and the adventures he has had in his unconventional career, which most recently includes touring in the acclaimed Dad’s Army Radio Show.

My Life with Kenneth Williams will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Wednesday 28 January at 7.30pm. For more information, or to book tickets, visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
