Anti-asylum seeker demonstrators and counter protesters back in Portswood on Friday

Following a flash demonstration last night (21/1/26) anti-asylum seeker protesters have announced that they will be back on Friday (23/1/25), gathering outside a Portswood hotel housing asylum seekers who have been placed in the accommodation by the Home Office whilst awaiting the outcome of their asylum applications.

Southampton Stand Up To Racism will be holding a counter ‘defend refugees’ demonstration, with protesters gathering outside Waitrose in Portswood at 5pm and marching up the high street before gathering outside Highfield House Hotel, to counter the anti-asylum protesters.

The number of anti-asylum seeker protesters gathering to shout outside of the hotel has dwindled significantly, from highs of around 100 in the summer, to a couple of dozen at the majority of this year’s gatherings.

Southampton Stand Up To Racism has continued to call counter demonstrations whenever anti-asylum protests have been announced.

In a statement addressing a recent alleged sexual assault at the hotel, which sparked yesterday’s flash protest by anti-asylum seekers, Southampton Stand Up To Racism said: “Sexual assault is a serious matter. Our thoughts are with anyone affected, and we support the right of all survivors to safety, dignity, and justice. The legal process must be allowed to proceed without interference, sensationalism, or political exploitation.
“We strongly reject the far right’s attempt to weaponise this incident to demonise asylum seekers and migrants. One individual’s alleged actions do not justify collective blame. The residents at Highfield House are overwhelmingly vulnerable people fleeing war, persecution, and hardship. They deserve safety and compassion, not intimidation.”
