Preview: Spitfire Girls, Theatre Royal Winchester

A story based on remarkable true events, celebrating the women who flew in WWII – Spitfire Girls – comes to Theatre Royal Winchester from Thursday 26 February.

Spitfire Girls is set on New Year’s Eve 1959 when two women separated by the war reunite in The Spitfire pub. As they chat, the audience learn their story and are transported back to a time when female pioneers defied expectations and dared to fly during WWII.

Inspired by the true stories of the women who flew during the war and the incredible bond that tied them, Spitfire Girls is an untold story of strength, courage, loss and hope – with The Stage saying it captures ‘the real human emotions beneath the stories of heroism’.

Funny and heart-warming, Spitfire Girls is a new play by Katherine Senior – an actor, writer and producer with over 20 years’ experience in the theatre industry. It comes to Winchester courtesy of Tilted Wig Productions, formed in 2017, with previous productions, including Around the World in 80 Days and Murder, Margaret and Me – about the friendship between author Agatha Christie and the actress who played her famous character, Miss Marple – Margaret Rutherford – both shows of which have visited the theatre.

The production is brought to the stage by Tilted Wig and Mayflower Southampton, in association with Theatre Royal Winchester (part of arts and education charity, Play to the Crowd). It was developed with the support of the National Theatre’s Generate programme, which supports new theatre work by providing dedicated time and resources to artists and companies to help create and develop productions destined for venues outside of London.

The production, which premiered at MAST Mayflower Southampton last year and enjoyed a successful debut tour, marks the 80th anniversary year of the end of WWII. The show’s stop in Winchester is part of a second major UK tour in 2026.

Spitfire Girls will be at Theatre Royal Winchester from Thursday 26 – Saturday 28 February at 7.30pm; 1.30pm (Thursday matinee) and 2.30pm (Saturday matinee) Recommended age: 10+ as show contains themes of war.
