Preview: Macbeth, Theatre Royal Winchester

A dark and visceral manifestation of Shakespeare’s most wretched tragedy, Macbeth, comes to Theatre Royal Winchester from Thursday 5 March, with multiple performances.

Macbeth is the classic tale of greed and guilt, telling the story of a man who is met by three witches who inform him he will be King of Scotland. What follows is one man’s violent rise to power and his downfall.

The production is brought to the stage by Flabbergast Theatre, who, since 2010, have built up a reputation in physical theatre, clowning, puppetry, mask work and more. As well as touring theatre shows, they also run workshops for companies and schools.

For Macbeth, Flabbergast present Shakespeare’s original text accompanied by and supported with exhilarating live music to create a powerful soundscape that compliments and juxtaposes the action – with a tightknit ensemble of actors performing a visceral manifestation of the work’s essence and themes – culminating in a magical, lucid interpretation of the blood-soaked tragedy.

Flabbergast’s Macbeth works to draw out the parallels with modern society – at its heart the dominant recurring theme the masculine fear of feminine power – making the play as relevant today as it has always been.

Following Thursday’s performance, there will be a post-show chat.

Macbeth will be at Theatre Royal Winchester from Thursday 5 – Saturday 7 March at various times. Recommended age: 12+ (contains stylised depictions of violence and murder). For more information, or to book tickets, visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
