A regular community unity counter-demonstration, organised by local campaign group Southampton Stand Up To Racism, will begin at the later time of 6pm tonight (6/3/26).
The counter-demonstration, which organisers have been holding since early summer in response to anti-asylum seeker protests, will begin at 6pm outside Waitrose in Portswood, Southampton.
Organisers say they are moving the start time in response to the anti-asylum seeker protest, held outside a hotel housing asylum seekers, placed there by the Home Office whilst they await the outcome of their asylum applications, being moved back from the regular start time of 5pm to the later time of 6pm.
The move may be in a bid to attract more people – the number of anti-asylum seeker protesters has dwindled significantly, whilst a planned march on Sunday saw 50-60 people gather at the hotel and march to Southampton Guildhall Square, whilst a “Unite Against the Far Right” counter-demonstration and rally attracted around 250.
