Review: Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Mayflower Theatre, Southampton

By Catherine Collins.

The glitter arrives early in Priscilla Queen of the Desert, which is currently dazzling on the stage at Mayflower Theatre, where it opened last night (16 March 2026).

Within minutes, the auditorium is awash with sequins, disco beats and unapologetic energy, and the show rarely slows down from there.

Based on the cult classic, The Adventure of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, the show’s enduring appeal lies in its heartfelt exploration and celebration of identity, diversity and the journey toward self-acceptance.

The stage musical follows drag performers Tick, Bernadette and Adam as they cross the Australian outback in a chaotic road trip, which quickly becomes something warmer – a story about friendship and belonging.

The soundtrack is essentially a live disco party, with hits – including I Will Survive, Hot Stuff, and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun – arriving one after another.

The touring production is big, bold and joyfully excessive, with dazzling choreography and a constant parade of extravagant costumes that seem to grow more outrageous with every scene.

But it’s the three stars at the centre of it all that truly shine.

The trio balance comedy with genuine heart, especially in the quieter moments that explore prejudice, ageing and the complexities of chosen family.

Kevin Clifton brings a real sincerity to Tick’s journey, giving the show an emotional core that grounds all the glitter and glamour perfectly. He’s a joy to watch.

Bernadette, played by Adèle Anderson, radiates class with the perfect mix of sarcastic wit, and Nick Hayes is Felicia – in a portrayal full of sass, attitude, and a heartfelt vulnerability that hits hard.

It’s impossible not to be moved by the journey of our three characters, and when the finale arrives in a full burst of disco euphoria, the audience is ready to take its feet for a well-deserved standing ovation.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert is exactly what you want it to be – loud, colourful and gloriously over-the-top.

It’s a glitter-soaked explosion of colour and a night of escapism that puts a smile on your face from the very beginning!

Tickets for Priscilla Queen of the Desert (Monday 16 – Saturday 21 March 2026) are on sale at mayflower.org.uk or 02380 711811.
