Southampton Stand Up To Racism have announced that they have called off today’s counter-demonstration, set to take place this evening in Portswood (17/4/26).
It comes in response to ‘Southampton Patriots cancelling their weekly anti-asylum seeker protests outside Highfield House Hotel in Porstwood, which houses asylum seekers, placed there by the Home Office while they await the outcome of their asylum applications.
The anti-asylum seeker protests began early last summer and have continued on an almost weekly basis, alongside additional protests. Over this time, the group varied their tactics, switching from announcing their rallies well ahead of time to making them public only hours before. The number of protesters attending has dwindled over that time, from tens to one or two dozen.
Throughout this time, Southampton Stand Up To Racism has held counter demonstrations, which have generally significantly outnumbered the anti-asylum seeker protests.
Southampton Stand Up To Racism have indicated that they will resume counter demonstrations should the anti-asylum seeker protests return.
In a statement on social media they said: “We stay vigilant. They have lied before. We stay united. And we will continue to stand up to racism, whenever and wherever it appears.”
