As the curtain rises with a bang at the Mayflower Theatre, The Bodyguard bursts onto the stage with renewed energy.
Seamlessly blending high-stakes drama with the electric atmosphere of a live pop concert, this latest stage production feels slicker and more immersive than ever, drawing the audience straight into the world of global superstar, Rachel Marron.
And it works brilliantly.
The story stays true to the much-loved 1992 film, starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, and follows former secret service agent Frank Farmer, who’s brought in to protect superstar Rachel from an unknown stalker.
While the plot remains familiar, this current tour leans confidently into its concert-style staging, with dynamic lighting, sharp choreography, and a pace that keeps the tension simmering throughout.
The set is simple, but it doesn’t need to be anything more. This show knows exactly what it is – and it’s all about the music.
With hit after hit from Whitney Houston’s catalogue, including Queen of the Night, So Emotional, One Moment in Time, and of course, I Will Always Love You – the audience is treated to one show-stopping number after another.
Sidonie Smith is solid in the role of Rachel, but sometimes her own interpretations of the vocals make it feel like she doesn’t quite reach the standout impact of some of the role’s strongest stars that have come before her.
Opposite her, Matt Milburn brings a calm authority and understated charm to Frank Farmer – creating a believable and engaging relationship between bodyguard and star. The audience particularly loved his version of I Will Always Love You.
Sasha Monique stands out as Nicki Marron, with a strong vocal performance and real emotion and depth, alongside moments of genuine vulnerability.
The ensemble is energetic throughout, helping to create that concert-like feel, while the looming presence of the stalker – chillingly played by James-Lee Harris – keeps the stakes high.
Special mention also goes to Cale Cole as Fletcher, who stole the stage on more than one occasion.
So whether you’re a fan of the film or just love Whitney Houston’s music, this is a show that’s easy to get swept up in, and, by the end, you’ll struggle not to be on your feet along with everyone else.
