Around 100 students from the University of Southampton, representing more than 30 societies, will be running this Sunday (3rd May) as part of a one-of-a-kind, student-led campaign raising funds and awareness for the crisis in Sudan, widely recognised as the largest humanitarian crisis in the world today.
After nearly three years of conflict, more than 20 million people require health assistance and more than 21 million face severe food insecurity, highlighting the urgency behind this effort. So far, the campaign has raised more than £6,000 and counting.
The initiative began within the Sudanese Society and has since grown into a wider, city- and campus-wide effort open to all students and residents. Funds raised will go towards supporting infrastructure and essential services in Sudan through established charity partners. The campaign has also involved collaboration with athletes, including a Sudanese Olympian, as well as national diaspora organisations supporting the initiative.
The group is an official charity partner of the ABP Marathon, and will be active in the charity village on the day, alongside a wider programme including live coverage and filming on-site, with student organisers and runners available for interview, and community engagement taking place throughout the event.
