Reader’s letter: Rioters from outside Southampton don’t see the lasting damage to our community

By Lori Foster, Councillor for Portswood.

Portswood is a community of diversity, community and togetherness.

After the dust of the  2nd June riots cleared, many of us, along with city council workers, headed up to clean and clear – to return order to our homes and streets.

By 10am, the streets were clear and from the outside, life appeared to be business as usual.

What the rioters from outside of the city don’t see, is the lasting damage that has been caused.

The elderly people scared of the noise and smell of burning – the fear remains. The children who heard the shouting and saw Police being pelted with bricks out of their windows, the trauma sits.

The family who came to Portswood to work, live and make a home – too scared to go out at night.

We are all horrified by the conduct seen in the Henry Nowak case, and many quite rightly demand thorough answers as to Police conduct.

A family has lost their son, the University of Southampton lost a bright student and talented football player, Portswood lost a member of its community.

It is only just and right that the IOPC investigate and hold any misdeeds to account.

What we have seen on our own streets, however, is not a call for justice, but a total disregard for Henry’s family, friends and community – politicising and activating a divisive agenda to cause fear and damage.

This is not our home – Portswood stands together, stands behind Henry’s family and supports each other, we do not attack our neighbours and spread fear.

We do not want murder on our streets. And nor do we want racism or rioting. This is our home and our sanctuary.

As a mother, I spent last night trying to calm frightened children. As a Councillor, I have spent much of today checking in on residents, local businesses and visitors – talking to and reassuring people who feel worried about the act of simply being at home.

I have attended and will attend community and Police briefings and demand that we are safe and not failed. I’m proud to be part of Portswood, and stand with my community today and always.

And finally, to Henry’s parents, family and friends – I’m sending love and care to you all.
