Southampton’s BBAM Festival returns to the city on Saturday, August 8th, bringing Africa and the Caribbean to life.
The event – the Black Businesses, Art and Music Festival, features prototype cultural villages that celebrate the richness and diversity of Black heritage.
The event, taking place from 11am to 7pm in the Guildhall Square, will feature entertainment including live musical performances, DJs, singers, dancers and spoken word.
The International Cultural Villages will have traditional games, storytelling and heritage displays.
There will be food & non-food stalls with authentic African and Caribbean cuisine, fabrics, beauty and products.
There will be an opportunity to get involved with Kwame’s Drumming and exhibition workshops.
Other attractions include a Jollof Rice Competition, a health and wellbeing zone, Unity 101 Roadshow and a community takeover of John Hansard Gallery.
Abdoulie Sanneh, Chair, The United Voice of African Associations (TUVAA) and BBAM Festival founder explained why the event is so special.
He said: “From intricate art and rare artefacts to vibrant masquerade, painting, fashion, drumming, dancing and authentic food, each village offers a window into a different tradition.
“It’s culture shared on the biggest stage — where established and emerging local musicians, poets, and performers come together for a full community takeover at the John Hansard Gallery.
“Beyond the music and creativity, BBAM is also about community care and connection. We host a Jollof Rice competition between Ghana, Nigeria and The Gambia, and a dedicated Health Zone with doctors and consultants looking after all of us. It’s a cracking day of learning and entertainment: come to taste, watch, shop, and experience traditions you won’t find anywhere else, and leave inspired by the stories, sounds and flavours that unite us.”
