Messages of support from musicians and fans have been flooding in for Southampton-based musician Michael Kiwanuka after the multi award-winning musician revealed he recently suffered a stroke.
His team made the announcement in a post on social media last night (23/9/26) in which he shared the details of his forthcoming album, Fudge as well as his health scare.
In the post, he said: “I’m very happy to be announcing to you my new album FUDGE. I’m especially happy because the last few months I’ve been battling some health problems which would heavily hinder and get in the way of me making music for the foreseeable future.
“A few months ago I suffered a stroke brought on by a bleed in my brain brought on by high blood pressure. It’s a long journey recovering from a stroke which is why I missed some gigs out in the US, but I look forward to seeing you all soon.
“I’m not sure when I’ll be back out on the road or what that will look like, the brain injury I suffered was quite severe and there’s a lot of rehab to be done, it’s a long, tough journey ahead but I’m fighting to get better.
“It’s been a difficult few months I must say but it feels like I’m on my way now.
“I want to say a special thank you to all the incredible NHS staff and every single medical professional who has helped care for me and continue to help and encourage me in my recovery.
“And thank you to my friends and family for their continued support and to my team who will keep you updated with all things Fudge related.”
Among those who replied with messages of support were Hollywood actor Jason Momoa who messaged from his Prideofgypsies account “Love you bro please take care and I hope you recover fast,” radio presenter Lauren Laverne who said “So sorry to read this Michael. What a time you must have had. Really glad you have good care and wishing you a full recovery asap. One day at a time xx,” musician Alicia Keys who said “love and blessings Michael,” musician Olivia Dean who said “Sending love,” and comedian Romesh Ranganathan who said “Sending you love bro.”
Well wishes also came in from actors John Simm and James Lance, DJ Spoony, musicians Orlando Weeks, Jamie T, Self Esteem, Beth Orton, Freya Ridings and hundreds of other musicians, collaborators and fans.
Further information about new album Fudge was shared on social media today, revealing that the album was written almost concurrently with the writing of Michael’s fourth album ‘Small Changes’ back in 2023.
It added: “During this time FUDGE became a project of its own, without the bells and whistles of a ‘big’ studio and away from any outside pressures, just Michael making music purely for the love of it. The album captures a sense of optimism, playfulness and freedom. This is showcased in the beautiful psychedelic art work and visuals created by Michael’s friend and artist @_stevie_gee_ .”
