Southampton community bakery to hold teddy bears’ picnic

Families in Southampton are being invited to a teddy bears’ picnic at a community bakery in the city this month.

CommuniBakes on St James Road in Shirley is hosting the free event on Saturday, August 27 from 10.30am and people can tuck into their picnic lunches and take part in craft activities on the day.

Ally Molyneaux, Bakery Manager at CommuniBakes, which is the charity Communicare’s commercial venture, says: “We wanted to give the families in the local community something to do during the summer holidays, so we are inviting them to bring their picnics and their teddy bears and join us for a teddy bears’ picnic.

“People can bring their own picnics or snacks or purchase something from our counter on the day. We’ll also be taking pre-orders for freshly made picnics in advance, people just need to call us, or they can order on the day.

“We will also have rugs and seating set up and anyone is able to pop along and have a chat as well as enjoy some magic from Steve the Magician.”

People will be able to purchase a CommuniBear on the day for £5 each to join them for the lunch, with all proceeds going towards Communicare and the work it does.

CommuniBakes (previously Love Cake) was purchased to help raise funds for Communicare in November 2021 and is a separated limited company. All profits from the bakes sold go towards the charity and the work it does to help lonely and isolated people across Southampton.

Communicare, which is a friendly, neighbourhood charity, provides services that enrich the lives of lonely and isolated people in and around Southampton. Its services are staffed by its  volunteers, known as Communiteers.

Communicare’s Good Neighbours’ Network currently supports more than 600 individuals/families through tasks including one-to-one telephone befriending, transport for essential appointments and assistance with shopping.

The teddy bears’ picnic will take place at CommuniBakes on Saturday, August 27 from 10.30am.
