Northern Ballet is bringing Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale to life this autumn, as it brings The Little Mermaid to Mayflower Theatre from Thursday 20 to Saturday 22 October.

When a young mermaid is finally allowed her first glimpse of life beyond the ocean, she is enthralled by what she sees. Falling in love with a mortal Prince she leaves her magical underwater world behind, losing her voice and enduring immense pain to make the ultimate sacrifice for love.

From breath-taking underwater scenes to vibrant life on land, rediscover this classic tale, as performed by Northern Ballet’s world-class dancers with Celtic-inspired music played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

Abigail Prudames, Premier Dancer at Northern Ballet and Marilla in The Little Mermaid, says: “Everyone knows Mermaids are magical! I get to play a magical creature that has a life under the sea and on the land.

“It’s not necessarily the happy ever after everyone is expecting but I won’t spoil it for future audiences. This being said there is very much a joyful celebratory atmosphere in some scenes. The audience get to understand that the transformation from the tail to the legs isn’t a smooth one as she is left in a lot of pain, but luckily Prince Adair is her cure

“People just love a fairytale!

“Adults remember them from their youth and want to share it with their children; or children find something appealing in the title and then their imaginations take them on a journey. In a fairytale there is always a ‘goodie’, a ‘baddie’, a hero or a heroine – there is just something for everyone.”

Tickets for The Little Mermaid (Thursday 20 to Saturday 22 October) are on sale at mayflower.org.uk or 02380 711811.
