Campaigners for access to an NHS dentist for all to hit Southampton’s streets

Campaigners for everyone to have access to an NHS dentist will be on the streets of Southampton tomorrow (October 25).

Members of the Toothless in Southampton campaign will be giving out leaflets and talking to shoppers and residents at the junction of Burgess Road and University Road from 11am.

The British Dental Association has described an ‘exodus of dentists’ from the NHS and a ‘crisis in patient access’.

Toothless in Southampton has been set up to highlight the plight of residents who have found themselves increasingly unable to access NHS dental care.

An organiser said: “As fewer dental practices are providing NHS dental treatments in the city and surrounding areas, we are seeing the negative impact this is having on families, men, women, and children. It is often so severe that some are taking matters into their own hands. Stories of DIY dentistry are common and on the increase”
