Southampton listings, 15-21 November

There are more than 130 listings this week, lovingly compiled by our friend Chris at Shop Local Southampton. There should have been at least three more, but sadly three gigs were cancelled while he was putting the listings together. It highlights how important it is for venues and artists for people to buy tickets in advance – if you wait to buy them on the door, there may be no door – or rather the door will probably still be there, but the band you wanted to see might not be on the other side of it.

The bottom line is, if you want stuff to happen, support it if you can. There, you came for listings, you got a little lecture. But the listings are also here, and there’s loads going on this week. This includes Jools Holland at Bournemouth Pavilion, Portsmouth Guildhall and the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, as well as Native Harrow (pictured top) doing ‘in-stores’ – also known as an intimate gig in a record shop, at Hundred Records in Romsey, Vinilo Record Store in Southampton and Pie & Vinyl in Southsea, and Kaiser Chiefs in Bournemouth (click here for an interview).

On stage this week there’s a comedic exploration of old age and death in Beautiful People at Theatre Royal Winchester (click here for more), Dreamgirls at the Mayflower Theatre (read more here), and Bombay Superstar at MAST Mayflower Studios (click here for more).

Other events include poetry from Leyla Joseph at Southampton’s Bookshop Alehouse (read more here) October Books’ monthly online book club (read more here)  lots of events in Southampton Film Week (click here for more) and a Christmas lights switch on.
