Morganway describe themselves as a formidable live act, and I certainly have no argument with that. Appearing at the Joiners, Southampton, on Sunday, the band gave an excited audience a great show. For some of the band, it was somewhat of a homecoming as they had studied at Southampton University, and they clearly had a local fanbase to call on for the show.

The band have enjoyed sell out tours, played great festivals such as Black Deer and Glastonbury, as well as receiving acclaim from the BBC’s Bob Harris. All well deserved.

Their style could be described as Americana Rock, and similarities could be drawn to greats like Fleetwood Mac. Morganway’s lead singer and lead guitarist also happen to be married, but they were keen to laugh of any other similarities to the ill-fated relationships of Fleetwood Mac!

The music was superb, skilled artists playing a well-rehearsed set. Keyboard, violin and wonderful vocal harmonies adding to the mix.

Another highlight of the evening was the fabulous support act, Alyssa Bonagura. Sporting her Tennessee attire, Alyssa charmed the audience with her beautiful voice and wonderfully crafted songs. She was clearly flattered by fans singing along to her lyrics and her charm on stage brought smiles to the faces of everyone watching. Even though Alyssa lived in Liverpool for three years, and was happy to prove it with her best attempt as a scouse accent, she was obviously an American gal at heart. Americana Folk at its absolute best. If you get chance to hear Alyssa play live while she’s in the UK, I suggest you tale it. You won’t be disappointed.
