Vandals trashed the only Enabled Allotments in Southampton but volunteers wouldn’t give up

When a St Denys resident asked the council about the availability of dedicated allotments for folk with disabilities in Southampton, the answer was “I don’t think there is one”.

Indeed most of the allotment sites she visited were inaccessible, so she raised the issue with some residents in St Denys. Immediately, a community group came together determined to create what would become the ONLY dedicated allotments for residents with disabilities and special needs in Southampton.

Specially designed planters were created and located next to St Denys Community Centre ready for use.

But disaster struck when the newly made planters were deliberately, seriously vandalised.

Determined that residents with disabilities/special needs should not be deprived of the wide range of benefits including health, food welfare etc, volunteers, local residents and businesses joined forces to recreate the allotments.

“We will not give up” was their message to the vandals.

Thanks to South West railways, a new site was found.

And despite terrible weather, a great group of volunteers, local residents and volunteers from Hays built planters, cleared and painted unloved areas and much more during a recent Action Day.

More Action Days are being planned. Contributions are very welcome of hand tools, durable wood, paint and more.
