Preview: 2:22 A Ghost Story, Mayflower Theatre, Southampton

The critically acclaimed, smash hit, supernatural thriller, 2:22 A Ghost Story, arrives at Mayflower Theatre from Tuesday 17 to Saturday 21 October 2023.

Jenny believes her new home is haunted, but her husband Sam isn’t having any of it.

They argue with their first dinner guests, old friend Lauren and new partner Ben – can the dead really walk again?

Belief and scepticism clash, but something feels strange and frightening, and that something is getting closer, so they’re going to stay up until 2:22, and, then they’ll know.

It’s an adrenaline-filled night where secrets emerge and ghosts may or may not appear.

2:22 is written by award-winning writer Danny Robins, creator of the hit BBC podcast, The Battersea Poltergeist, and is directed by Matthew Dunster and Isabel Marr.

“Over the last year I have had so many people asking me on social media when we are going to bring 2:22 out on tour,” says Danny. “That moment has finally arrived.

“We are beyond excited to be taking the show around the UK. It’s a play that will make you laugh, scream, cry, think and jump out of your seat – a proper spooky night out  – and it’s coming to a town near you!!!

“Do you dare come and watch? We can’t wait to see you!”

Joe Absolom (A Confession, Doc Martin) will play Ben, Charlene Boyd (Mayflies, River City) will play Lauren, Nathaniel Curtis (It’s a Sin, The Witcher) will play Sam, and Louisa Lytton (EastEnders, The Bill) will play Jenny.

The cast explain what scares them most in life.

“If I put the bins out, I have to run in when it’s dark,” says Joe. “I’m not very good at being scared.

“Life scares me, bills, health. Ghost stories are pretty scary. I wouldn’t want to do Ouija board. I’m happy to believe but I don’t want to poke the nest. I’m not a ghost hunter”

Charlene adds: “I am very easily scared, but I also love adrenaline and new experiences. So while I am scared of roller coasters, it doesn’t stop me from doing them.

“There’s certain aliveness to being frightened. Obviously, if it’s within the realms of safety, like going on stage for example, there’s a high-stakes experience in fear that I enjoy.”

“Puppets scare me in particular,” adds Nathaniel. “And marionette’s!

“I was in a music video for Years & Years where I wore a headpiece with live snakes coming out once. Absolutely terrifying.”

Lauren continues: “I am very easily scared

“So it’ll be quite interesting when I’m on stage in the pitch black telling a ghost story!”

2:22 A Ghost Story features set design by Anna Fleischle, costume design by Cindy Lin, lighting design by Lucy Carter, sound by Ian Dickinson for Autograph Sound and illusions by Chris Fisher. Casting is by Matilda James.

2:22 A Ghost Story is produced by Tristan Baker and Charlie Parsons for Runaway Entertainment, Isobel David and Kater Gordon.
