Preview: Northern Soul: Do I Love You, Theatre Royal Winchester

Northern Soul is celebrated in a hilarious new dance fuelled comedy, Do I Love You? at Theatre Royal Winchester from Thursday 12 October.

It follows Natalie and Kyle, two burger bar employees, as they fall in love with Northern Soul – despite not being very soulful themselves! But, after a weekend partying in Skegness, the star-crossed lovers can’t wait for their next all-nighter in Blackpool. Out on the dance floor they’re in their own world! But as the north levels up, Natalie and Kyle’s life takes a downturn and they’re steered by the music that was once a failure and learn to live for now.

Do I Love You? is brought to the stage by multi award-winning playwright, John Godber – who, he himself, has been a fan of Northern Soul since 1972. Godber – who was the son of a miner in Upton, North Yorkshire and trained as a drama teacher – has seen his plays, which include Bouncers and Teechers, performed worldwide.

The Northern Soul movement was born in the late 1960s in discos in the north west of the country – with DJs exploring American soul music and clubs hosting legendary all-nighters.

Do I Love You? will be at Theatre Royal Winchester from Thursday 12 October to Saturday 14 October at various times. Recommended age: 14+. For more information or to book tickets visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
