Southampton listings 12 – 18 December

It’s mid-December and we’ve hit the Christmas motherload, but that doesn’t mean Southampton has suddenly become a one-trick pony on the entertainment front. If going hard into Christmas-related activities is your thing, then you are certainly spoilt for choice, and if you fancy something a little less tinseltastic, there’s plenty on offer too.

For the festive lovers, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is well into its run at the Mayflower Theatre, and is there until 31st December. Fans of A Christmas Carol can enjoy something of a double helping this week. Firstly, there’s a musical retelling at the Turner Sims on Thursday, and then a more as-it-was-intended version by award-winning storyteller, Jason Buck, at the Art House on Saturday night. And look out for another incarnation in next week’s listings.

If you do find yourself in town on Saturday, be sure to look out for the Christmas Lantern Walking Tour that starts at the Tudor House Musuem at 5pm.

Away from the bauble-brigade, you can catch Southampton’s own Sean McGowan, at the 1865 on Friday night, with support from Rob Clamp and Scarlett Grigg. On Saturday night, Mainly Madness will be at The Brook. If that isn’t quite enough Ska for one night, then why not go for Skamaggedon just down the road at The Dolphin.  On the other hand, if Ska isn’t your thing then you’ll want to be down the other end of town, to catch Southampton-based rock and blues singer-songwriter Molly Meaker at Heartbreakers.

Finally, why not make it a very happy Monday, with a Happy Mondays open mic night at The Cricketers (that’s on Monday, for those who have started on the Baileys extra early and can’t keep up).
