Fans and supporters of emerging local talent are invited to the Unwritten: Scratch Night at Theatre Royal Winchester on Friday 13 June.

An evening of monologues and duologues, each is an original piece by a local writer who has worked with an assigned director to bring their script to life. The 12 writers and directors who have worked hard on the six performances were partnered after a creative speed dating event in April, where they pitched their ideas and showcased their work.

The six writers who were chosen at that event were: Ayse Evans – who enjoys ‘big stories with big themes with humour and a hug’; Cecily O’Neill – who has written a number of books on drama education; Jonathan Edgington – a writer of plays, sketches and more, plus a best-selling series of short pantomimes; Sara Fairclough – currently performing a selection of new writings, Sian Laing – who graduated with a drama degree but whose first love is writing for theatre; and Yvonne Maxwell – who is working on an anthology of short plays with a shared theme of visual art.

The directors working with them are: Alix Cazalet – with a passion for new musical theatre writing, comedy and audio; Daisy Norwood – who creates work about women for women with ‘a dash of history and a sprinkle of magic’; Josh Whatsize – with an interest in new writing and co-creating work with young people; Rebecca Godden – whose work blends live theatre and immersive/site specific performance; and Rebecca Tebbett – who runs a business providing acting support, and enjoys her directorial debut as part of Unwritten.

Following the performances, one play will be selected as the winner and the writer and director will receive further support to help them develop the piece for a performance at the Unwritten: Showcase, at the theatre on Friday 29 August.

Unwritten is an artist development programme devised by Playmakers – the creative learning and community engagement work of the arts and education charity, Play to the Crowd – who also run Theatre Royal Winchester and Hat Fair.

Unwritten reflects the charity’s ongoing commitment to nurturing talent and showcasing local emerging voices in theatre.

The Unwritten: Scratch Night is a Pick Your Price event meaning audiences can choose a ticket option that works best for them – for as little as £4.

Unwritten: Scratch Night will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Friday 13 June at 7pm. For more information, or to book tickets, visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
