A National Theatre Live cinema-style screening of Shakespeare’s Othello will take place at Theatre Royal Winchester on Sunday 19 March at 7,30pm.
In this new production of Shakespeare’s most enduring tragedy, a bright, headstrong daughter of a senator, Desdemona, is elevated by her status – but stifled by its expectations; while a refugee of slavery, Othello, has risen to the top of a white world, but finds love across racial lines comes at a cost.
After they wed in secret, the couple craves a new life together – but as unseen forces conspire against them, they find their future is not theirs to decide.
Brought to the stage by director, Clint Dyer – who has also written for BBC Films and acted in TV series, Black Mirror, Othello features Giles Terera from Hamilton, Rosy McEwen from The Alieniston Netflix, and Paul Hilton from the play, The Inheritance; and is filmed live on the Lyttleton stage of the National Theatre.
Early this year the Winchester theatre announced it would host a number of screenings of filmed performances of National Theatre productions – filmed across London’s West End, with a live-stream performance from the Harold Pinter Theatre.
Last month audiences took their seats for a screening of a contemporary new staging of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and the theatre is set to host the Olivier-award winning stage adaptation of Life of Pi, GOOD, set in pre-war Germany, and Best of Enemies, which explores late 1960’s American morals.
