The Southampton UK City of Culture bid team has announced that have secured our place as one of the eight longlisted locations to become UK City of Culture 2025.
The city has worked hard over the past two years to understand and consult across communities, residents, businesses and organisations to develop a bid that is from and for the people of Southampton. Work to date has seen a huge coming together of organisations and communities throughout the city and beyond. With over 130 organisations and 9 neighbouring local authorities committing their support.
Today’s news brings Southampton one step closer to realising its ambitions of becoming UK City of Culture 2025.
The organisers of the bid said: “This truly is a city-wide effort. and we want to take this opportunity to thank everyone of you for your support, collaboration and passion to deliver change and opportunity through culture in Southampton.”

The way that Southampton has come together to get behind our bid is unprecedented for our city, and I want to thank everyone for their belief and unwavering support. We now move forward with confidence and optimism to the next chapter of our story to become UK City of Culture in 2025.”
The full application deadline is Wednesday 26 January 2022, this will create a short-list of 4 locations with judges visiting those shortlisted in March 2022 and the winner announced in May 2022. Read more about why we believe Southampton should with the bid here.
