A demonstration was held on Saturday )January 28) by Southampton Keep our NHS Public. There were supporters from all across the county, all ages and all professions, there to show their support for the NHS. They gathered at the Bargate and then marched through the city centre.

There were speeches and singing from Southampton Red Choir and drums and performances from other groups. The crowds were in good volume saying loud and clear “Save Our NHS!”

For many this was a way to show their support to the nurses and call on the government to roll back in the privatisation of the service.
Campaigner Hellen Field said “there are 50,000 nursing vacancies at the moment and we’re not going to attract more people to the profession unless we have decent pay and decent conditions.”
John Jess said “I was born in 1943 so just before the NHS was set up. I don’t want to go back to a world where only those who can afford it can get treatment, where the poor are condemned to a life of bad health. The NHS is one of this countries greatest achievements and I’m here today to do what I can to save it, so that it’s still there for my grandchildren. Save our NHS!
There will be a national day of demonstration on Saturday the 11th of March in central London set up by Keep our NHS Public.
