Southampton listings: 26 September – 2 October

It might be October this weekend – and honestly, how can it already be October? – but it’s still festival season in Southampton, with an exciting new event coming to the city this weekend.

To coincide with the start of Black History Month, Sunday sees the first Black Business, Art and Music Festival (pictured top) come to the city, a free event featuring loads of live entertainment, food, workshops and more.

There’s an eclectic range of live music on offer. Henge bring their ‘cosmic dross’  – somewhere between rave and prog rock – to The Joiners on the 29th. Genre-bending German gothic metal band Lord of the Lost, as seen on this year’s Eurovision, will be coming to Southampton’s 1865 tonight. Meanwhile, if you’re bursting with excitement about seeing Take That in Southampton next year, you could make the wait more bearable, or build up the excitement, with jukebox musical Greatest Days at Mayflower Theatre.

Exciting theatre comes to the city with Frantic Assembly’returning to MAST Mayflower Studios from Tuesday 26 to Saturday 30 September with Metamorphosis.

Julian Stannard will be reading from his forthcoming collection Please Don’t Bomb the Ghost of My Brother, and will be joined by award winning poet Peter Robinson at October Books in Portswood, Southampton, on September 30th.

Further afield, Winchester Comedy Festival is back with two Gala Nights featuring top line-ups of stand-up comedians across Friday 29 and Saturday 30 September, while comedian Mark Watson looks for meaning in his stand-up show, Search, at Theatre Royal Winchester on Thursday 28 September.
