Followers of the shipping forecast can tune into Attention All Shipping: A Celebration of the Shipping Forecast with Charlie Connelly at Theatre Royal Winchester on Friday 7 June.

This year the shipping forecast celebrates 100 years, and bestselling author Charlie Connelly presents an informative, funny, pacy and moving show about the quirky broadcast – asking how a weather forecast for ships captures the hearts of a nation, if it’s possible for ‘rain later’ to be good, and where North Utsire is.

He dives into the history of the forecast and the people who made it, explaining what the curious phrases mean, celebrating the forecast’s wide cultural impact, and sharing adventures from his own journey through the 31 sea areas – including the time she was accused by the media of trying to annex Rockall from the British government, and when he sang sea shanties with actor Tom Hardy in a hotel bar while Scary Spice pulled pints!

He also presents his case for the shipping forecast being our finest achievement.

The talk is inspired by the award-winning broadcaster’s bestselling book, Attention All Shipping: A Journey Round the Shipping Forecast, which has sold more than a quarter-of-a-million copies worldwide. As well as books, Charlie has also written for most of the UK’s national newspapers, and comedy scripts and documentaries for BBC radio. He is also a popular public speaker who has spoken at the Royal Geographic Society, the National Maritime Museum and the Edinburgh Festival.

His talk promises to take audience members from Viking to South-East Iceland, ensuring that the shipping forecast never sounds the same again!

Attention All Shipping: A Celebration of the Shipping Forecast with Charlie Connelly will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Friday 7 June at 7.30pm. For more information or to book tickets, visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
