As part of the Jane Austen 250 Celebrations in the city this year, Mayflower are presenting two Austen-themed productions – and on Tuesday, the cast of Pride & Prejudice* (*sort of) currently performing at Mayflower Theatre met the talented young cast of The Last Rose of Summer, performing at Mayflower Studios in August.
Handing the Jane Austen baton over, they met, shared insights, and even chatted with the brilliant writer and director of Pride & Prejudice* (*sort of), Isobel McArthur, who gave the young cast words of encouragement ahead of rehearsals starting for The Last Rose of Summer, which features a cast of over 50 young local people aged 11-25
The Last Rose of Summer – created by the exciting writing team of Daisy Chute and Rebecca Brewer – is a brand new contemporary one act musical inspired by Austen’s life and her connection to Southampton.
Isobel McArthur, Writer and Director of Pride & Prejudice* (*sort of) said: “It’s so important to engage with and encourage the next generation of theatre makers.
“The future of the creative arts depends on them. I feel honoured to get to meet so many talented young people here in Southampton taking part in the fantastic opportunities Mayflower provides, such as The Last Rose of Summer.”
Jane Austen had a notable connection to Southampton. After her father’s death in 1805, she and her family moved to the city, where they resided until 1809.
Jane Austen’s 250 birthday celebrations take place throughout the city until December 2025.
The show features a string of pop classics including Young Hearts Run Free, Will You Love Me Tomorrow and You’re So Vain. Pride & Prejudice* (*sort of) is running at Mayflower Theatre until tomorrow (Saturday 14 June), with tickets still remaining.
Tickets for Pride & Prejudice* (*sort of) (11 – 14 June 2025) and The Last Rose of Summer (8 – 9 August 2025) are on sale at mayflower.org.uk or 02380 711811.
