The story of a couple torn apart by war but brought together through letters is told in Dear Loll: A Wartime Marriage in Letters at Theatre Royal Winchester on Remembrance Day Sunday 9 November.

Set in the summer of 1940, Dear Loll tells of Manchester Guardian journalist, Gerard Fay, who is called up to fight in World War II leaving his wife Alice, or ‘Loll’, in England, and the candid and compelling correspondence they share dover four years.

Dear Loll tells of the thousands of letters that form their only means of communication; packed with drama, humour and emotion. The couple’s correspondence is a previously unheard testimony of the experiences of ordinary people of the time and gives an insight into how one couple survived, physically and mentally – in part by writing to each other every day, sometimes twice!

Dear Loll features TV actors, Daisy Waterstone (The Durrells, ITV) and Charlie Hamblett (Missing You, Netflix).

Dear Loll is brought to the stage by Hambletts Productions, who earlier in the season brought to the theatre, A Beautiful Thread: Thomas Hardy in Words and Music – which proved a huge hit with audiences. Dear Loll is adapted by Rosanna Greenstreet and Matthew Fay and directed by Judy Reaves. The show is accompanied by live onstage music, arranged by David Le Page and performed by the Le Page Ensemble.

Dear Loll comes to the stage on the 80th anniversary year of VE Day.

Dear Loll: A Wartime Marriage in Letters will be at Theatre Royal Winchester on Sunday 9 November October at 3pm. Recommended age: 14+ (some adult content). For more information, or to book tickets, visit: theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk or call 01962 840 440.
