Southampton listings 19 – 25 December

By Neil Glasspool

He’s making his list. He’s checking his twice. And he’s somewhat taken aback at the remarkably eclectic mix of events that are on offer in this week’s Southampton listings.

This week’s big news is A Christmas Carol at MAST. Billed as ‘a youthful musical to raise your spirits’, it’s on all week and there until new year’s eve. But there’s plenty more happening around the city besides the expected festive fare.

On Thursday night, you’ll find reggae punk in the shape of Ruts DC and The Duel at the Joiners, or you could treat yourself to the Ukulele Jam Xmas Bash at Belgium & Blues.

If you’re feeling generous, and you should be because, you know, it’s the time of year for that kind of thing, then Friday night sees another Save the Platform event, this time at The 1865. Over at the Art House there’s A Very Merry Queermas, which promises an evening of cabaret, comedy, gender bending, song and music.

On Saturday night, why not properly stick two fingers up at Christmas with some rockabilly from Shortstack and Sides at the Dolphin.

Finally, it’s Christmas Eve on Sunday and for those who aren’t frantically wrapping presents and repositioning that damn elf on the shelf one last time, there’s Christmas Carols in Hamble Square, Southampton Modern Jazz Club at Whiskey Blue, and of course, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is still on at the Mayflower.

However you choose to spend the week ahead, have a lovely Christmas everyone.
